On September 23th-24th, 2024, our project consortium gathered in Berlin for a productive meeting. We reviewed the progress made since our last session and mapped out the next steps for developing our framework to align with the needs of European defence. As we approach the halfway mark of the project, we also began planning user demonstrators to showcase our outcomes. A special highlight was presenting our work to a representative from the German Ministry of Defence.
We are delighted to announce that our team had top-ranking results in translation of low resource spoken dialectal Arabic into English at International Conference on Spoken Language Translation (IWSLT). This year’s IWSLT conference presented a great opportunity for the ALADAN technical partners to collaborate on an additional project which is closely related to ALADAN’s core objectives. IWSLT is the leading annual scientific conference dedicated to all facets of spoken language translation. For the past 20 years, it has been at the forefront of the field, publishing significant research and organizing key evaluation campaigns. This year's challenges encompassed simultaneous translation, consecutive translation, and subtitling tasks, catering to real-time, low-latency, as well as offline archival needs, all within the context of low-resource, multilingual, and multimodal constraints.
We are pleased to share that ALADAN was one of the EDF projects presented at a two-day conference focused on Research and Innovation in Defence in Cyprus. The consortium was represented by IANUS Technologies, which showcased the progress of the ALADAN project to representatives from the Cyprus MoD and key stakeholders within the Cyprus defence ecosystem.
December 2023 marks one year since the beginning of the ALADAN project, presenting an occasion for the consortium to conduct its M12 meeting, which was held on December 4th-5th in Larnaca, Cyprus. In presence of all consortium members and the project Advisory Board including representatives of several MoDs, the attendees had an opportunity to discuss the project progress and next steps, and to engage in a demonstration session showcasing the advancements made thus far. The convened discussions during the two-day meeting proved to be highly beneficial, offering valuable insights into crucial aspects of the project. This involved a review of project updates, a comprehensive understanding of the challenges currently being faced, and an insightful exploration of the expected upcoming milestones.
We are pleased to announce that ALADAN was among projects presented during the Czech MoD‘s European Research and Development Day, which took place in Prague on October 9th, 2023. The event provided an excellent opportunity for military officials and industry representatives to exchange insights acquired from their participation in the EDF projects. The ALADAN consortium was represented by its Czech member, Lingea.
On June 28th-29th, 2023, The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS) held a networking event dedicated to entities interested in the EDF calls. The event took place in hybrid format, both online and in-person (Brussels, Belgium). ALADAN consortium was represented by the members from Vocapia Research, Crowdee, and IANUS Consulting.
The ISS World Europe gathering, which took place in Prague on June 6th-8th, 2023, was the opportunity for another meeting of the ALADAN consortium members. The meeting was held on June 6th, 2023, in presence of all 4 SMEs which are a part of the ALADAN consortium. Consortium members had the chance to review the activities accomplished thus far, and deliberate on subsequent steps in accordance with the project timeline.
ISS World Europe brings together the largest group of professionals in field of cybercrime investigation, electronic surveillance, and gathering intelligence. The 2023 ISS World Europe took place on June 6th-8th in Prague, the Czech Republic. ALADAN project coordinator, Vocapia Research, was one of the presenters at the event, delivering a presentation titled “Drowning in audio data? Speech technologies to the rescue”.
On January 10th, 2023, ALADAN project had its kick-off meeting in European Commission HQ in Brussels, Belgium. During the meeting, consortium members had the opportunity to discuss the project's objectives, timeline, and the specific responsibilities each member would undertake.
